Need help with divorce :( briannajoy: Hi. My story is a long one but.. I'm 22 years old and I need a divorce. I've been separated for over 2 years and just want to get away from this loser. We should have been divorced a LONG time ago but he was supposed to take care of it then I realized that he is irresponsible and won't take care of it. So I have to get the papers together and drive 3 hours to his place.
The problem is, I have no idea how to fill the paperwork out and I'm worried that he will try to con me into something or I dont' know.. I'm also scared to go see him but that's another issue.
Does anyone know of any FAQ site on filling out divorce papers? This is for Washington State. I'm completely lost and I'm sure he won't know anything about it. Also, can I just print the papers off of the internet or do I need to go in and get them?? Does anyone know of a place I can print the papers off the internet if I can? How many copies should I make??
I feel completely lost and wish there was a clear cut way to do this.
Thanks for your help,
Brianna
Re: Need help with divorce :( briannajoy: Also- He has major debt up the a$$ and I don't want to be responsible for his debt.. what do we do to make his debt his and my debt mine? What about the debts we incurred as a couple? I know Washington state is a community property state, what does that mean?? Also HE incurred this one debt at an apartment complex that we initially moved in to together, but I moved out after 2 months, come to find out he left there incurring over 2000 in damage which I shouldnt' be responsible for! This is all confusing to me and I wish as I said before it was clear cut.
Sorry for all the questions.. :(

Re: Need help with divorce :( Old_Shoes: As little as I like lawyers it sounds like you need to hire one. Especially if you are afraid of being conned out of something. I had no clue of the process and an initial consultation with a lawyer was an eyeopener in a lot of ways both good and bad.
Re: Need help with divorce :( briannajoy: I would really like to get a lawyer but, I am very very very broke, in other words I'm scraping by. There's no way in heck I can afford a lawyer :( he can't either so I'm kind of stuck here :(

Re: Need help with divorce :( barelybreathing: Would you qualify for legal aid then? There are clinics in every city/county that you can utilize for service. Many attorney do pro bono work too......worth looking in to.
Where there is a will there is a way. I am a paralegal, here is a great tip, a lot of times if you file pro se and go in for a hearing, attorneys standing around in the courtroom get pegged by the judges to take your case as pro bono work. An attorney is not going to tell a judge no. We took cases all the time in which the attorney I worked for was in the courtroom and felt sorry for the pro se litigant or the judge urged them to take over. It makes for an easier time for the judge and a judge wants no hassles.
Since you have internet access, there are countless sites that can guide you on all aspects.....
Best of luck to you...
