Re: Mental Illness---Bipolar itwillgetbetter: aching all over,
Yes. I would tell people some of the things that he would do and several people asked me if he was bipolar and I told them no. Well enough people asked me that I started looking into and researching bipolar and I could not believe. The symptoms fit him to a T.
Numerous divorces, no long-term friends, bankruptcy, highs and lows that are very high and very low. Certainly the separation may have brought it out more but looking back I can even see a couple events before we were married that were a little out of whack. I thought they were due to stressful time periods but now I believe they were symptoms of bipolar.
Re: Mental Illness---Bipolar achingallover: o.k., here are some of the "symptoms" for bi-polar
- presence of at least one manic episode or one mixed episode
A manic episode is:
-a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood.
-Lasts at least 1 week, or any amount of time if hospitalizaions is necessary
-3 or more of the following:
-inlfated self-esteem ro grandiosity
-decreased need for sleep
- pressure of speech
- flight of ideas
- distractibility
-increase in goal-directed activity, or psychomotor agitation
-excessive involvement in pleasureable activities that have a high risk for painful consequences (like excessive sex, spending large amts of cash)
for bipolar, Lithiam is the most popular drug used. Usually for men, they start cycle with manic episode. If he is bipolar, antidepressants will trigger a manic episode - that's bad!
Anywho, this info I got from the DSM IV - I am currently in school for marriage and family therapy. I'm still in the proces of learning all of this stuff - I by no means "know it all", but hopefully this infomation is somewhat hepful for you. If I can help in any other way, let me know. It is possible, if he has been having very high highs and low lows or even just a general level of depression plus manic episodes(hi-highs) that he could be bi polar. Bi polar people are a rollar coaster ride man. At this point, I think I'M BIPOLAR!!!! :o
hang in there.
Re: Mental Illness---Bipolar Billsfan709: After some research on the internet..I came the closest I can with out a pHD to figuring out what was going on with now "Ex" (as of today). I believe she suffers from Historionic Personality disorder..the symptoms..
1. Must be the center of attention.
2. Displays inappropriate sexually provacative behavior.
3. Expressions of emotions which are shallow and unbelieveable.
4. Comes across as fakes and phonies.
5. Great emphasis on physical apperance to attract attention.
6. Theatrical, exaggerates, and uses speech that is vague and lacking in detail.
7. Easily swayed by others.
8. Considers friendships and relationships to be far more intimate then they are.
I could give specific instances where all this stuff manifested itself, but read my story and see if I'm not on to something.
An interesting note, in a more detailed study done on this behavior pattern..two things popped out at me..
1. My ex is manic depressive (diagnosed)..they're treating it with anti-depressants..This makes Historionic Personalities WORSE. Guess I got out at the right time.
2. For all intents and purposes, it's incurable. And she's going to go on sabotaging relationships for a long, long time.

Re: Mental Illness---Bipolar Jasmine23s: My s2bx and I are both bipolar....and neither of us are on meds. He had gotten a book about understanding your moods. They had little self quizzes you could take to determine your personality type. Both of us were Seekers...which partly explains the mess our marriage became...we both get bored too easily in work, relationships, etc.
FYI...Lithium should never be the sole prescription. It is what is referred to as a capper and must be used in conjunction with an antidepressent in bipolar treatment. For instance, Paxil takes care of the depression. But, you will be manic. The introduction of Lithium subsides some of the effects of the Paxil (puts a cap on the manic) so you are not too far in either direction.
Re: Mental Illness---Bipolar wildwildwest: Get the hell out of dodge before the shooting starts! my x is severe bipolar never been treated divorced 10 years he was dangerously violent lucky to be alive our son Jesse was put through hell my son from a previous marriage was physically abused by him also. I would run like hell! I think if there was a scale from one to ten about how bad he suffered from mental illness he would be a 10+++++++++++ Mental illness I don't think can really be explained you need to witness it or live it before you have any idea what it is about. I'm sure with meds it might be a hole different story. It was scary. I'd like to tell the rest, but gotta to go. Good luck, you are going to need it!
