Re: question luvbai: Its sickening! I know! I wonder what they do in "testing." Are they testing their diet? Are they being fed coke & frech fries as their well rounded diet? Now, I'm not saying diet along could be the cause for the hyperactivity...... but I do think it & the environment they are being raised in has a HUGH effect. You would be suprised at the children that have this sooo called ADHD, formally ADD for those out of the loop! I'm not even really convienced that its a viable disorder. I would be glad to hear any feedback on that though. Because, as I said earlier, some children may actually have it. I've just never met any that I though did!
Heck, let these kids be kids instead of medicated versions of adults!
Just my soap box 2 cents! Sorry!
Re: question scardycat30: Jasmine - I have 1 with ADHD - without the hyperactivity. Though - he was not diagnosed till he was in 2nd grade and it is my understanding that 2nd grade is about the age they can really tell better. I think 4 yearold is way too early. He is on the lowest dose of adderal that they prescribe - it does make a difference on his focus at school - only at school. Our Dr. told us that he only has to take it on school days so he does not during the weekends vacations or summer. I have a hard time understanding a child who is not school age needing medication. The medicine helps him focus - but it has side effects that go away after a couple weeks. Loss of appitite and headaches are the ones we have dealt with. About 2 weeks into the school year these subside - he sometimes still gets a headache in the evening.
I fought the medication. At 1st I thought is had more to do with him adjusting to our move to Dallas. So when he started a new school the 2nd year we were here - I didn't put him on it and didn't mention it the teacher to see if she would have same trouble. He did have trouble - we tried low dose of meds and it really helped. He is not a zombie at all.
Just be really careful - and get 2nd opinion - It most likely is just bein 4. personally I wouldn't worry bout it until hes older.
Re: question Jasmine23s: His father has ADHD to start with. I eliminated sugar and food coloring from his diet with no change. I have tons of nieces and nephews, friends with kids, etc, so I know at this age they do tend to be very active. But he is 10 times worse than anything I've ever seen. it is nonstop motion! He cannot focus on anything...not cartoons, games...nothing. He has an appointment Thursday for testing. I already told the dr that I would prefer not to go the med route just yet...that I'd rather try behavior modification first as well as counseling. The other thought the dr had was early signs of bipolar. Apparently, based on new research, many children diagnosed as ADHD are actually exhibiting early signs of bipolar. This would not surprise me either...my father, sister and I are all bipolar. I do not believe in meds. I have a friend that had a son around mine's age when he was diagnosed ADHD....and the meds they put him on left him like a zombie. I refuse to allow that to happen to my son. But, I do want to know what the issue is with him beacuse it is becoming increasingly difficult to deal with. Thanks for the input. :)
