Children's Rights samschool1: Hey eyeryone, my name is Sam, and I'm in 8th grade. I am doing a debate for school and would like you to notify me with your opinion: Should children be able to pick which parent to live with in times of divorce. Thanks for your time,
Sam

Re: Children's Rights wendymac2002: Sam-
You may not agree with this answer...but here it is anyway. (I'm a school counselor and a mom, so I do have some prejudices).
It really depends on the maturity level of the child. Children don't always know what is best for them. When you go to Dad's house and you get to stay up until midnight, drink soda in the living room and not have to do any chores...that sounds pretty appealing doesn't it? But that might not be the best place for the child.
Children may tend to choose the place where they have more fun...not where they're better off.
There are times however, when it may be appropriate for children (teenagers) to choose who they want to live with. Maybe you and your mom fight like crazy and you're both about to kill each other. But, when you go to stay with Dad, you just kind of click...he understands you and what you need better...then maybe it is appropriate for a child to choose. But only if they are mature enough to make that decision.
Hope that helps!
Wendy
