Re:What do you want out of life? Daniel: Imagine we're the pigeons in Skinner's famous experiment:
http://psychclassics.yorku.ca/Skinner/Pigeon/
In the experiment the pigeons are given food at a fixed interval without regard to anything the bird is doing. But the birds try and make an association between what they were doing and receiving the food. It's been called superstitious behavior. They keep doing the same thing hoping/expecting to get fed for it. There is no way for the birds to comprehend that a technology exists that is controlling their food/life. What makes humans any different? If there was anything/nothing controlling our rewards, would we ever be able to detect/comprehend it? Or would we come up with elaborate superstitious behavior called modern society and the American dream? If you're not satisfied with your accomplishments, perhaps you've come to realize that they don't really matter. They are simply other's superstitious behavior. What is the Matrix?

Re:What do you want out of life? stillsmarting: Good topic!! :)
As for me, I'd like to always have
- Just the right amount of work to keep me busy & out of trouble, not too little and not too much
- A few good friends to stand by in thick and thin
- Family
And I think life would be empty if I didn't have these three things!!
Re:What do you want out of life? hardened_heart1970: i only have one thing i want out of life.
its to make sure im the best dad to my 2 daughters, and help get their partially ruined lives back on course. nothing else matters. the only love i need is from them, and i WILL get them through what their mom has done to them. no if ands or butts..........
Re:What do you want out of life? LostTeacher: thinking of just me is a huge change from my old life. like many others, i was just happy having this person by my side, even if i wasn't enjoying everything we were doing. now that i am on my own, it's hard to just think about myself. i don't know why it's so hard to focus on ourselves, and easy to take care of others.
i have a combo of short and long term goals:
short: join the gym (have wanted to do this forever)
short: not be afraid to be alone in my place
short: to keep busy enough not to think about stbxh all the time
long: extra work/job (for the clothes and the cash!)
long: start a new relationship (even though the old one didn't work doesn't mean i still don't want to be married and have kids)
Re:What do you want out of life? RecoveringinDE: Dino, this is awesome!
Short/Med goal w/long term effects - Lose the weight that I have put on. Will make me happier and healthier.
- Go back to school to get a better chance career wise.
Long term - Get into a higher position at my job. My goals were never to ambitious. However, I'm going to learn to depend on myself and get myself ahead.
- To meet and marry my soulmate.
Most important of course! Be the best Mom I can be to my daughter. And I know doing all the above will help me even more to be that. It will show her it is ok to care about myself and to be independent, but still want someone in my life to share and be happy.
My thoughts were jumbled there, hope you understood =)
