Things that seemed to say, "I'm changing and this is all my fault but really it's not, it's yours." I don't know him at all and you only a little, but it just didn't sound sincere to me - it sounded controlling.

I tried to send the counterpart to it-- How to Tell He's Not Changing, but it was too long for this thread. I hope it's ok that I emailed it to you.
The first line of it caught me right off-he says "I can't change unless you do."
Seemed to fit.
Also, someone here was right about his refences about your friend-- that's just his big time insecurity showing through, IMO.

That is true. All those things he said, in the middle of apologizing, is trying to share the burden of guilt left and right and to you too. Doesn't sound like a changed person...
