It doesn't sound like you are worried out your ex for his sake, but because when he acts irresponsibly it affects your life. I know how that is. I have the same problem with my ex keeping employment. Why would I care if he's working or not? Because, if he isn't working then he has no money to pay me any child support. I need that money to make ends meet.

I am working my a$$ off to afford my house (mortgage) so that my kids will not have to move. We bought this house only 9 months before he left, and spent two years searching for it.
Without child support, I would NEVER be able to afford my mortgage and probably would not even be able to rent anything comparable to my current home.
THIS is why I am freaking out. He is just so irresponsible ... I hope he has really grown up since we split up.

I understand the worry of money. My ex has given me nothing for our 4 kids since he left. Says that he cant afford it. Having to go through the courts to get anything out of him.
All that you can do though is just wait and see what he does. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you that he has grown up and that you and the kids are OK.
